Carlo Innocenzo CARLONE

Scaria 1686 – 1775 Como

The muses Urania and Thalia

upper left signed: Carloni and number 98

Title on the right: Talia segna la comedia e si leva una maschura /
Urania segna lastrologia coronata di stelle con un globo“

pen and brown ink, grey washed, 21,5 x 33,3 cm

The sketch shows an early design stage for a profane ceiling decoration. The pronounced shadow areas give the female figures a strong plasticity. Several drawings by Carlo Carlone are known in which he describes the composition (see Christie's Paris, March 22, 2007, lot 230, draft titled "Diligenzia"). Thematically, this drawing could have been used for frescoes in the ballroom of a palace and can be dated to Carlone's mature period. From the late 40s, Carlone primarily created frescoes for castles in Lombardy.
