Franz EYBL

Vienna 1806 - 1880

Portrait of a Gentleman

signed and dated: Eybl 1832

oil on canvas, 98 x 74 cm, original gilt frame

Alongside Waldmüller, Kriehuber and Amerling, Franz Eybl is one of the most important representatives of Austrian portrait painting. Eybl entered the academy at the age of 10 in 1816, where he studied under the teachers Mössmer, Lampi, Caucig and Peter Krafft until 1828. His generation overcame the rigid, distant and cold descriptions still attached to classicism, be it portraits, historical or genre scenes.
In this portrait alone, which only consists of the head and torso, you first find a realistic description of the personality (as it might have actually looked), but at the same time the transfigured look and the slight inclination of the head carry a personality equipped with Sensitivity and empathy, before. This psychologizing representation characterizes the Viennese portrait painting of this time and especially the artistic quality of Franz Eybl.
